Light sweeps grains of sand,

Heats the ferrous oxide —

Water becomes gracious

And lifts the warmer oxygens.

The sardines rise.

My friend Kalevi Makkonen

Pulls his nets

And there it is,

A wave of tossing light

Brought up from the sea.

The precision

Of happiness

Remains a mystery.

Boats return to harbor

In the Åland Islands.

The sun drops swiftly

Behind the fishermen’s church.

Toasts are made

And light divides

At the rim of a glass.

A persistence

Without tears.

And again

Light streams

Through the odd angles

Of dishes

And lifted hands.
